Hindustan Power has announced that one of its group companies has received a Letter of Intent for the exploration of a platinum group elements block in Madhya Pradesh, marking its entry into India’s critical minerals sector. The allocation follows a competitive e-auction conducted by the Ministry of Mines, where the company emerged as the preferred bidder. The Padhar block, covering around 200 square kilometres, has been identified as a prospective zone for platinum group elements, along with associated zinc deposits.
Commenting on the development, Ratul Puri, Chairman, Hindustan Power, said, “The acquisition of this critical mineral block marks a significant step towards enhancing India’s resource security. Platinum group elements play a crucial role in enabling next-generation technologies that will drive the future of energy, mobility, and advanced manufacturing, including clean hydrogen production, fuel cells, and catalytic and electronic systems.”
He further added, “Through this exploration, we aim to establish a dependable domestic supply base for critical minerals while maintaining a disciplined and responsible approach. This initiative aligns with India’s broader priorities of strengthening supply chain resilience and advancing its position as a global energy leader.”
Speaking on the company’s diversification strategy, Mr Puri noted, “This development represents a natural progression for Hindustan Power as we expand beyond our core energy business into sectors that will shape the future industrial landscape. Critical minerals such as platinum group elements are becoming increasingly essential for clean energy technologies, advanced mobility solutions, and high-value manufacturing. Our entry into this space enables us to participate in a strategically important segment closely aligned with India’s long-term development goals.”
Platinum group elements, which include platinum, palladium and rhodium, are essential for a range of advanced applications, including clean energy technologies, hydrogen fuel cells, emission control systems and electronics. Their growing importance has made them a strategic resource globally, particularly in the context of energy transition and advanced manufacturing.
