Rainbow blade treatments are pretty popular in knives and lighters, and it’s not that hard to find a folding knife that has one. A rainbow butterfly knife carries the same appeal, but unlike a conventional OTS (out-the-side) folder, a rainbow butterfly knife has 2 distinct attributes that make it a (potentially) better option, at least for some buyers and collectors. Let’s take a closer look at what these are.
There’s No Lock That Can Fail
This is the biggest material advantage in terms of a rainbow butterfly knife and the good news is that it applies to all butterfly knives.
Carrying a folding pocket knife is convenient. You don’t need to carry the knife in a sheath on your belt and can just let the knife loose in your pocket. This is a big advantage.
The one potential problem is that, at least for locking folding knives, there is a lock that, given the wrong (or right, depending on how you look at it) circumstances, can fail.
With a butterfly knife, though you can lock the blade open, this is really not the case. Generally the blade is riveted or secured to two pivot points at the tops of the handle halves. These rotate, allowing the knife to be both opened and closed.
And you can lock the knife open, but to do so, you basically latch the two halves of the handles together at the bottom. There is no locking mechanism here in the same sense as there is with other folding knives.
This results in a design that is much simpler and more secure than other folding knives, because there is no lock that can fail. As long as the two handle halves are properly secured together, you have a potentially sturdier design.
It is conceivable that the pivot points at the base of the blade could fail, but if what you’re doing with the knife causes this, you realistically have a much bigger problem than a failed knife lock.
They’re More Fun
The other thing about a rainbow butterfly knife is that it, like other butterfly knives, will prove more fun (and more fidget friendly) than other types of folding knives.
Whereas other folding knives may have flipper tabs or thumb studs or holes that are a lot of fun to learn how to use, and which themselves may also prove fidget friendly, butterfly knives are literally surrounded by a whole cult of users that are dedicated to mastering (and pioneering) tricks for opening, closing, and more.
So, with a butterfly knife, you will enjoy countless hours of fun learning how to open and close them using unique methods and tricks, and can even potentially invent your own.
There is a bit of a learning curve associated with learning how to use one, but after you master the basic techniques for how to open and close one, the sky’s the limit with respect to what you can come up with.
Where to Get a Rainbow Butterfly Knife
These are the two biggest selling points of a rainbow butterfly knife, on top of the fact that they’re just plain cool. If you’re in the market for one and want to see what’s out there, check out True Swords first.
True Swords, which sells a wide variety of replica and battle-ready swords and weapons, also carries a lot of fixed and folding knives, including stilettos and butterfly knives. Check out their collection and get in touch with them if you have any questions about what they sell before you buy.
