Cannabis product names carry an air of specification — a cultivar, a lineage, a designation. Almost none of it is verified by anyone.
Nobody owns a strain name
Cultivar names are not protected, registered or verified. Any producer may apply any name to any plant, and no authority checks the claim.
Two products sharing a name may be genetically unrelated. This is the single most important fact about cannabis naming and the least widely understood.
Breeders name, growers rename
A breeder names a cross they developed. From there the name travels through cuttings, seed stock and informal exchange, accumulating variation at every step.
Nothing tracks that lineage. What reaches a shelf is a name with a history nobody recorded.
Marketing does the rest
Dessert names, fuel names and celebrity associations exist because they sell. A name that suggests sweetness will move product regardless of terpene profile.
That is not deceptive so much as unconstrained — there is no standard requiring a name to correspond to anything, so it corresponds to what sells.
Genetic testing exists and is barely used
Laboratories can genotype cannabis and identify relationships between samples. A handful of producers use it; the overwhelming majority do not, because nothing requires it and it costs money.
Where a producer does publish genetic verification, that is genuinely unusual and worth noting.
Extraction changes the answer anyway
By the time flower becomes vape oil, extraction has altered the terpene profile substantially. Distillate loses nearly all of it and has flavour reintroduced.
So the name on a cartridge describes an input rather than reliably the output. A platinum vape vape pen, garden mother vape pen, hic vape pen or the pass vape pen listing carrying a familiar cultivar name is telling you what went in, not what came out.
What to use instead
Extract type first, then a terpene panel if one is published, then the aroma description, then the name. That ordering reflects how much each field can actually be relied on.
